|It is a book of great courage and hope. In the novel, Ivan is a silverback gorilla who lives in a circus in the big top mall. Stella the elephant and Bob, a stray dog, are Ivan’s best friends. One day Mack, the owner of the circus, buys a baby elephant named Ruby. Stella takes care of Ruby, mothering her in absence of Ruby’s own mother. However, Stella has a foot that is often infected and Mack does not like to call the vet because of the expense. Thus, Stella’s foot gets another infected again and she dies unfortunately. When Stella dies, Ivan makes a promise to save Ruby from a life of captivity. It takes some time, but Ivan and Ruby are eventually moved to a zoo and they have a happy life after that.|
“I’ve never asked for a promise before, because promises are forever, and forever is an usually long time. Especially when you’re in a cage.” (p. 111)
“If she could have a life that’s……different from mine. She needs a safe place, Ivan. Not-“ “Not here.” I say. (p. 112-113)
“I promise, Stella,” I say. ”I promise it on my word as a silverback.” (p. 112-113)
“I shouldn’t have made that promise, Bob. I just wanted--” I point to Stella’s domain, for a moment, it seems like I’ve forgotten how to breath. “I wanted to make Stella happy, I guess. But I can’t save Ruby. I can’t even save myself.” (p. 118)
“Did the baby elephant get to the zoo?” Ruby asks softly. I don’t answer right away. “yes,” I say at last. “How did she get there?” Ruby asks. “She had a friend who made a promise.” (p. 167)
“She’s here, Stella,” I whisper. “Ruby’s safe. Just like I promised.” (p. 294)
The reason I choose these quotes is because I suppose that the word ”promise” is the most beautiful word that is said by Ivan. In the following part, I also want to mention the theme of the promise Ivan made, and give the afterthought about that. In the quotes, we can see that Ivan had strong sympathy for Stella. He didn’t want to make his friends feel upset; as a result, he agreed to satisfy Stella’s last desire.
I learned the importance of a promise in the book. Stella wants Ivan to promise to take care of Ruby. In trying to keep his promise, Ivan changes not only his own life but everyone’s.
Stella has worked for Mack’s circus for a long time. Her legs wear long-ago scars from circling chains and she has serious injuries on her foot. Once she asks Ivan to promise that he’ll take good care of Ruby when she feels her days are numbered. Although she feels extreme pain, she wants Ivan to bring Ruby to a safe place.
Ivan takes his promise seriously. He feels that he and Stella will be able to move to a zoo someday. He wants to carry out his promise very much. Since Ivan is a loyal friend, he had never forgotten the promise.
After a long struggle, Ivan and Ruby finally realize their dreams. He uses his art talent to advertise the emotion of animals, and Julia, his soulmate, understands him. They successfully catch other people’s attention and keep Stella’s promise at last. Therefore, Ruby and Ivan both live in the zoo safely and happily.
After reading Ivan’s human-like thought and analyzing the significance of the promise to him, I’ve got the inspiration—if someone breaks the promise, that betrayal will destroy the friendship. I once wrote down my secrets on a small piece of paper when I was twelve. So did my good friends. We put those slips of paper in a box, and then dug a hole in the playground to hide them. We promised one another not to open until we graduated. But the next day, one of our friends dug it out. And the slips of paper were all gone! I just couldn’t believe any relationship then!
If my friend had been a person of his words like Ivan, we would still be good friends now. Nevertheless, it was a pity to end a friendship like that. Maybe honest admission and a sincere apology could fix the problem. Moreover, just like Stella said, promises are forever, and forever is an usually long time. People have to keep their promise during the long time! Ivan can do it, and why can’t we do? I look upon Ivan as my model due to his promise. He is not only the one and only Ivan, but also my superhero that saved his friends and encourage me a lot!
