一、圖書作者與內容簡介:
"The One and Only Ivan" is a novel written by Katherine Applegate. It is a book of great courage and hope.
Ivan lives in a stationary circus with Stella the elephant, Bob, the stray dog, and a baby elephant called Ruby. Only Stella has a foot that is often infected and the owner of the circus, Mack, does not like to call the vet. Stella evemtually dies of getting another infection in her foot.
Before Stella dies, she makes Ivan promise to take care of Ruby. Ivan is not sure how to do this, but he knows he must when Mack begins hitting Ruby in order to train her to do Stella’s tricks. Ivan hopes Julia, the janitor’s daughter, can help him get Ruby to the zoo.
Eventually, Ivan and Ruby are taken to the zoo. It takes some time, but he finally remembers how to act like a silverback.

二、內容摘錄:
” You know I can’t remember much,” I say. “ There’s a difference,” Stella says gently,” between ‘can’t remember’ and ‘won’t remember’”(Applegate,p.53)

“Memories are precious,” Stella adds. ”They help tell us who we are.”(p.53)

But hunger, like food, comes in many shapes and colors. At night, lying alone in my Pooh pajamas, I felt hungry for the skilled touch of a grooming friend, for the cheerful grunts of a play fight, for the easy safety of my nearby troop, foraging through shadows.(p.133)
“What’s a frame?” Ruby asks. “What’s a dollar? What’s a gift store?” I close my eyes. “I’m a little sleepy, Ruby.” … A memory flashes past, surprising me. I think of my father, snoring peacefully under the sun while I try every trick I know to wake him. Perhaps, I realize, he wasn’t really such a sound sleeper after all. (p.86- 87)

三、我的觀點:
Memories, a theme represented by the chararcter Stella, spans the whole story. The characters talk about their memories at night;memories are not only the connections between the past and present of each chararcter, but also the connections between the characters.
Memories model the characters and continuiously influence them.Stella the elelphant (she has an excellent memory) says that memories help tell us who we are. Because she has memories of being abused in the circus, she treats Ruby the baby elelphant ,that comes from a circus, really kindly. She only thinks about no one but Ruby before she dies. The characters recall themselves in the past, and they try to be same as or different from those. For example, Ivan wants to be with his family in the jungle again, but Stella does not want to stay in the circus anymore, or she does not even want to think about it.
But hunger, like food, comes in many shapes and colors. At night, lying alone in my Pooh pajamas, I felt hungry for the skilled touch of a grooming friend, for the cheerful grunts of a play fight, for the easy safety of my nearby troop, foraging through shadows.(Applegate, p.133)
From the quote we can find that Ivan likes to recall those days in the jungle, but he realizes that he should not because of his sister’s tragic end.
Memories are like scars on the characters’ skin and in their mind. Stalla’s sore foot never heals completely, and neither does her psychological trauma. She has been chained on a foot since since she was raised by human beings, and there is a scar on her foot that gets infected often. There is a scar in her heart too. And it gets infected and swells whenever she recalls it.
“ You know I can’t remember much,” I say. “ There’s a difference,” Stella says gently, “ between ‘ can’t remamber’ and ‘ won’t remember’.” (p.53)
From the quote we can find that Stella doesn’t want such a good memory, just as she can’t recover from her injuries.
Memories connect the past and present. The characters are made to recall the past when they find themselves in a similar situation or meet a person like somebody in their memories. In this case, they tend to follow the past and replay it in the present, and usually they can not control it,or even notice it.Recalling the past makes them understand things that were blurry for them then.
Ruby keeps asking Ivan what is a dollar, what is that pink cloud, can Bob fly, etc. This makes Ivan think of his father and how he acted when Ivan does the same for Ruby.
I relate to Stella because I remember every single event in my life. And I even remember things in my past lives. Others don’t knowhow miserable it is to remember so many things, like maybe if Stella doesn’t remember hoe she was treated in the circus, she might be happier. I have spent my whole live regretting the past, and I really wish this happened to somebody else instead of me.
Mermories model us, and we can’t hide from it. They sculpt one’s life and even the whole world’s history because everyone acts based on their memories.
