The story takes place at the Exit 8 Big Top Mall and Video Arcade.
Ivan the silverback gorilla has lived in captivity at the Big Top Mall for 9,855 days. In the book, he and his friends will get through all kinds of difficulties and problems to have a different life. From the book, you can use a total different way too look at the humans’ world again. This book includes all kinds of issues you might be interested in. Like the way humans treat animals, the true meanings of friends, families,or the meanings of promises and names.
People call me the Freeway Gorilla, The Ape at Exit8. The one and Only Ivan, Mighty Silverback. Humans have so many words, more than they truly needs. Still, they have no name for what I am. ( p.2 )
Understanding human speech is not the same as understanding humans.
( p.3 )
I know what most humans think. They think we don’t remember our pasts or ponder our futures. ( p.20 )
Humans have so many words, more than they truly need. ( p.143 )
Memories are precious, Stella adds. They help tell us who we are.
( p.53 )
What’s the world like in Ivan the gorilla’s eyes? How do humans look in a gorilla’s eyes? How do the animals deal with their wild fantasy, their joy and grief? From this book, I learn about their slight changes of emotions. I learn their different definitions of those things which are too common for us. I see the world through their eyes.
From the book, the mall hangs up all kinds of huge billboard painted with colorful patterns and glamorous names to attract people. Ivan, the gorilla, which lives in the cage of the mall, is given a bunch of names, such as The Mighty Silverback, the Freeway Gorilla. However, none of these good-sounding names show his ideas or reveal his feelings. For instance, Ivan enjoys drawing a lot. With his creativity, he always pour all his wild fantasy on the paper. Living in the humans’ world, that’s the way for him to show everyone who he is. Unfortunately, the name he is given can’t represent him. This makes me wonder about what’s the difference of names between humans and animals. Just as the quote goes in the book, “Humans have so many words, more than they truly need.” In animals’ world, names are sacred and important. Take Ivan for example. When he was still in the forest, he did not get his name right at the moment when he was born. Instead, Ivan’s parents observed him in their daily life. They found him a creative artist with curiosity. That’s the moment when the little gorilla finally got its name! On the other hand, Ivan’s sister is also well observed until she got her own name. They possessed completely different personalities, their parents know that very well. Ivan’s sister is an outgoing and carefree gorilla, which is Ivan’s best playmate for all time. To say it in other words, these names, which are deliberately discussed, all stand for someone unique. Just as the saying goes in the book, “And that is what they ( Ivan’s parents ) called me: Mud. To a human, Mud might not sound like much. But to me, it was everything.” Names are where they store personalities and memories of the whole life. Names are something they’ll never forget the whole life.
On the other hand, we humans do not hold names in such high esteem. Take our daily life for example, we can see new titles and names being created for business benefits every single day. Just like the keeper of Ivan always says, if something can be a great hit, then that means it’s a good thing for all of the businessmen in the world. Ivan gets numerous names only to please visitors. He gets names for his build, his looking, his talent for drawing, his performance. It’s really hard to imagine how to live under these fake names that don’t belong to him. The definition of a good name in humans’ world is all about how much benefits it can get.
As for Bob, a stray dog, which usually wanders around the mall, has its special way ( sometimes quite ironic ) to see and comment the world. From the paragraphs in the book, he always looks strong and helpful. You can hardly feel the fragile or the sensitive side of Bob.With the death of the elephant, or with the depression Ivan gets, Bob always gathers all his thoughts together and try to provide the best advice for each animal. Though sometimes the warmth of his help can hardly be felt in his cold words, but all of these heart-warming actions have already shown that he’s a reliable friend. However, when it come to owning a name, we can see the desire deep down Bob’s heart. Just as the quote goes in the book: “The best thing Julia ever gave him was not t a drawing. Julia gave Bob his name.” I think this sentence is really touching, with a touch of sorrow. A stray dog’s daily mission is to keep itself from starving. Nevertheless, deep down in its heart, a dog might have a strong desire for having a name. This is something we might have never thought before. For Bob,if he gets a name, though having nowhere to stay, it is still okay. A name is like a home, where he gets his sense of belongings.
The significance of the name gives me a chance to re-think the true meaning and what should it stand for again. For Chinese people, parents try their best to think of a best name for their children. Whether they ask a fortune-teller or to look up a lucky name in the dictionary, the process of deciding names is full of affection for me. My mom used to tell me the story of my name, which I still enjoy a lot now. They went to a fortune-teller with all the information about me and asked for my name. The name cost them thousands of dollars because that fortune-teller was quite a famous one. As the result came out, my name represented a quiet and elegant girl, who could grow up happily and be healthy. This lovely explanation of my name is also told by my mother. Names are like the second gifts from our parents, while the first is our lives. With the names filled with parent’s expectations, we start out for our lifelong journey. There will be sadness and happiness for everyone to experience, and challenges from time to time. We can’t predict the results all the time for sure. We also can’t escape these good or bad things. Whether winning or losing, being happy or frustrated, we people always live under our own names. The bliss of being awarded, the guilt of being blamed, all kinds of memories are connected with our names. They stand for us.
For me, our names are gift boxes. They contain the accumulated experiences of life, the gifts from our life.
